Former CSCL exec to lead AP China integration into CMA CGM
Zhao Hongzhou, a former general manager at China Shipping Container Lines, has been tapped to lead the integration of of APL’s greater China operations into CMA CGM.
Zhao will report to APL’s chief business officer Thomas Cassuto and work out of Shanghai. Zhao started his shipping career at Cosco, which recently merged with CSCL into China Cosco Shipping.
Zhao moved to CSCL in 1997 and became a general manager there in 2012.CMA CGM closed its acquisition of APL from parent NOL group in July and plans to retain and develop the APL brand, which is well known among shippers in Asia and on the trans-Pacific trade.
CMA CGM will be a member of the Ocean Alliance along with Evergreen Line, Orient Overseas Container Line and China Cosco Shipping Lines from April when the new vessel-sharing agreements take effect.
Ocean will have the largest market shares on the trans-Pacific and Asia-Europe trades, with 40 percent and 35 percent, respectively, even if one factors in Hyundai Merchant Marine with the 2M of Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Co., and the addition to United Arab Shipping Company to THE Alliance via UASC’s merger with Hapag-Lloyd. The other members of THE Alliance are NYK Line, MOL, “K” Line, Hanjin Shipping and Yang Ming Line.
